Dr. E.Z. Psarakis was born in Chanea, Crete, Greece, in 1963. He is married with two children. He received his Ph.D degree form the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics, University of Patras Greece in 1991. Since 2005 he has been an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics, University of Patras, and a member of the Signal Processing and Communications Lab.
Dr. Psarakis has published more than 35 papers in refereed international technical journals and proceedings of international conferences. He has served as a reviewer of many international technical journals such as IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, Elsevier Signal Image and Video Processing, Elsevier Signal Processing, Elsevier Signal Processing Fast Communication and EURASIP Journal on Applied Signal Processing. He has participated, as a principal investigator, for more than ten Hellenic, EU and bilateral R&D projects in the area of signal processing, biomedical signal processing, robot vision and medical image processing.

Digital Signal Processing : Undergraduate, Third year, Spring semester, Core.
Topics elaborated: Sampling and signal reconstruction. Discrete Fourier transform, FFT, Linear and cyclic convolution, Overlap and add, Overlap and save. FIR digital filter design methods: minimum mean squares, don't care. The min-max criterion, Remez exchange algorithm. IIR analog and digital filters: Butterworth, Chebyshev, Design using frequency transformations. Special digital filters: Notch filters, Differentiators, Integrators, Hilbert transformers. Introduction to optimum stochastic signal processing: Wiener filtering with finite and infinite impulse response. Basic spectrum estimation techniques: Spectrogram, Periodogram, AR-model based techniques.
Applications of Digital Signal Processing : Undergraduate, Fourth year, Fall semester, Elective.
Topics elaborated: Single-chip programmable signal processors. Hardware aspects of digital signal processing (DSP) systems, architectural issues, and fixed versus floating pointing representations for implementing DSP algorithms. The emphasis of the course is on the design and implementation of DSP algorithms. The algorithms are implemented on personal, portable DSP based boards. Applications to speech processing, adaptive filtering, telecommunications, image processing and video processing.
Computer Vision and Graphics : Undergraduate, Fifth year, Graduate, Fall semester, Elective.
Topics elaborated: Image formation and optical sensors. Elements of Perspective Geometry. Camera Calibration, orthographic scene projection, linear and nonlinear estimation algorithms of internal and external camera parameters.  Photometry, Shading and Color.  Multidimensional processing systems. Multidimensional Linear Systems and Fourier analysis with emphasis on Gabor filters and wavelets. Analysis of images at multiple scales, image pyramids. Texture Analysis: Fractals, filters Gabor, size distributions. Segmentation of images. Shape Analysis: Curvature, distance transform and skeleton. Basic non-linear systems for analysis of shapes and images. Estimation of optical flow and motion. Stereopsis and geometry of multiple images, scene reconstruction from two images and multiple images. Image Alignment and Registration, Mosaics, Image Metamorphosis. Super-resolution.
